Gastric Band Surgery Scotland

If you have been struggling with weight control and diets just are not working, then a gastric band may be the solution for you. A gastric band is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can bring life changing results to patients.

Who are Aspire Weight Loss?

Aspire Weight Loss is based in Bath Street in Glasgow’s city centre and led by a nationally recognised team of surgeons who specialise in bariatric procedures.

Both surgical and non-surgical procedures and are performed by either Mr. Hasan Kasem or Mr. Chris Shearer -  both of whom are recognised expert surgeons in Scotland and the UK in the field of bariatric surgery. Our surgeons are supported by dieticians and specialist bariatric nurses, also based in our Glasgow clinic.

What may life be like after surgery?

For the majority for patients, life after weight loss can be liberating. As you lose weight you may begin to find a greater sense of well-being and improved quality of life. You may also find yourself capable of more physical activity than before. Additional benefits may include the reduction of obesity related illnesses such a heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

What is a gastric band?

A gastric band is a soft and adjustable silicon band that is placed around the upper area of the stomach and can be closed or locked to create two chambers; a small upper stomach with a narrow opening to the lower stomach causing restriction in passing food. Periodic changes can be easily made to the band depending on your weight loss.

What is involved?

You will be given a general anaesthetic that will put you to sleep so you are unable to feel any pain during the procedure. A camera will then be inserted into your stomach allowing the surgeon to see inside. Your surgeon will then make one to five small surgical cuts in your abdomen through which they will place the camera and instruments needed to perform the surgery. Your surgeon will place the band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch with a narrow opening into the larger, lower part of your stomach.

What happens after surgery?

Gastric bands generally need adjusted on average four-to-six times in the first year following surgery. Adjustments are carried out to ensure the band is not too tight or too loose to encourage continual weight loss.

How much weight may I lose?

On average the majority of our patients who had a gastric band fitted may lose approximately 60% of their excess weight.
